About the Book -- Encyclopedia Biblica: A Critical Dictionary of the Literary, Political, and Religious History, the Archæology, Geography, and Natural History of the Bible (in 4 volumes)

With meticulous attention to detail and enormous wealth of information covering almost every aspect of the Bible, this new electronic edition of the four-volume Encyclopedia should be of great interest to Bible scholars even today.

Because the Encyclopedia is in public domain and thus freely available in many places on the Internet, we have been reluctant to invest time and money in republishing it. However, after years of waiting for someone else to make it user-friendly by adding good navigation and cleaning it up to enable a descent searchability, we have decided that we are probably the best people to do it… and did it.

The result is an easy to use, full-text searchable access to enormous wealth of Bible-focused knowledge hidden in these four volumes… thanks to sophisticated navigation, single-click lookup of original Hebrew text, and copy/paste functionality that comes with automatically generated bibliography something which allows to quickly create fascinating and interactive subject road-maps.

Unhampered by traditional opinions, Encyclopedia Biblica is not for a faint-hearted. But it is precisely its skepticism and unrestrained willingness to entertain the wildest theories, make Encyclopedia Biblica – authored by some of the most respected scholars at the time of original publication, – one of the most interesting Bible-study tools… if for no other reason than it allows one to use it to follow “evolution” in opinions of “the critical school” scholars.

Although written from culturally Christian perspective with additional tendency to view Torah as a “pious fraud”, Encyclopedia Biblica has much to recommend nonetheless to Jewish Torah/Bible students as it supplies Jewish history of that period with rich texture of details that makes it so much more real. Critical approach to the most sacred of writings of Jewish people allows one to see Torah as a living, evolving document of two-way interaction between G-d and the Jewish people from the time of Abraham to this day.

First published in 1899-1903, the four-volumes contain as much material as some twelve volume encyclopedias. Its articles - authored by an international group of the most significant biblical scholars of the time - cover every book in the Bible, including traditional Apocrypha.

Not only does this encyclopedia covers all of that, it also covers every single name, place, and many improper nouns reflecting large percentage of biblical events and concepts.

Despite a great number of conjectural emendations many of which can't be called anything but outlandish or worse, the encyclopedia remains to this day a classic reference source and we highly recommend for all Bible student.
