Jewish Political Tradition throughout the Ages המסורת הפוליטית היהודית לדורותיה
by Moshe משה Hellinger הלינגר /Bar-Ilan University Press

In the past few years there has been a burst of interest in Jewish political tradition, focusing particularly on basic related issues. Even though the subject has been dealt with at length, there is still a lack of discussion dealing with political issues in the light of Jewish tradition. In this volume, distinguished scholars and promising young researchers have come together to create a significant contribution to research on Jewish political tradition, encompassing a wide range of periods and issues reflecting the Jewish political world. This book will appeal to scholars and students from various disciplines dealing with these issues (Talmud, Jewish Law, Jewish Philosophy, Political Science, History, etc.), and to the general public that finds interest in the relevance of the Jewish political world to the central questions concerning today's Jewish and Israeli society. The book is divided into two sections: the first section includes articles on the Bible and Hazal, on the

   LEADERSHIP IN TIMES OF CRISIS
by MOISES משה ORFALI אורפלי /Bar-Ilan University Press

The present volume examines individuals and groups that have influenced their times and societies in what Sidney Hook, the philosopher, defined in his book, The Hero in History, as someone who has had a profound impact on the history of his country and the world. Historical research no longer favors histories written about individuals who ``made`` history. With the development of the sociological point of view, more and more historians devoted themselves to the cultural, economic and geographic conditions which, by implication, ``made`` history. And yet sociologists are still fascinated by the concept of leadership in its various models and manifestations, and its varying efficacy. Times of crisis are the making or unmaking of a leadership. The present volume examines this theme in great depth and variety, encompassing a time span from classical Athens to the second half of the 20th century, and moving through Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The fifteen crises under discussion are al

   LOVE SONGS IN SUMERIAN LITERATURE
by YITSCHAK יצחק SEFATI צפתי /Bar-Ilan University Press

Love Songs in Sumerian Literature (Critical Edition in the Dumuzi-Inanna Songs) is a collection of all the sources, published and unpublished, dealing with the love, courtship and sacred marriage of the Mesopotamian love-goddess Inanna (Ishtar) and her divine spouse Dumuzi (Tammuz). This literary corpus composed during the Third Dynasty of Ur and the early Old Babylonian period (ca. 2100-1800 BCE) consists of 27 songs with approximately 1500 lines of poetry. In this volume, previous editions of the songs have been updated, both by collating the texts from the originals, scattered in various museums in Istanbul, the United States and Europe, and by incorporating in the text editions recently discovered duplicates. Each text edition is provided with an English translation, a detailed philological commentary and a literary analysis. The introduction to the corpus includes a thematic and typological study of the corpus and an evaluation of this literary genre. From the series Bar-Ilan

   ROMAN PALESTINE 200-400 THE LAND
by Daniel דניאל Sperber שפרבר /Bar-Ilan University Press

This volume surveys the agrarian history of Palestine during the third and fourth centuries CE. It describes the various phases of transition from a rural economy based primarily on small peasant proprietorship to one dominated by the large estate, owned by wealthy and often ruthless "barons," worked on a crop-sharing basis. The various factors contributing to this change are analysed, factors both climatic, economic, social and political. The character of the new class of nouveaux-riches is described, as is the plight of the poor farm-hand, and the relationship between them is examined. This study draws upon largely contemporary Palestinian Rabbinic sources, thus opening before the classicist a whole new body of material bearing upon almost every aspect of everyday life. It is demonstrated that the Rabbis, keenly aware of the economic pressures of the times, sought to alleviate the lot of the small peasant proprietor through a variety of legislative measures. And so too did the Emper

   STUDIES IN GALILEAN ARAMAIC
by E. Y. יחזקאל KUTSCHER קוטזר /Bar-Ilan University Press

Originally published 25 years ago in the periodical Tarbiz, the late Prof. E. Y. Kutscher's article has been inaccessible to the wider audience of Aramaic scholars who do not read Modern Hebrew. Based on manuscript evidence, Kutscher's study was the most important contribution to our understanding of Galilean Aramaic since the publication of G. Dalman's Grammatik des jüdisch-palästinischen Aramaisch in 1905. The translator consulted with the author during the course of the translation, and all references to primary and secondary sources have been re-checked to make this translation as accurate as possible.
