13 THE RIOTS OF TOLEDO AND HALEVI’S ESTRANGEMENT In those distant days Halevi, as a young physician, took part in the general prosperity of Jews in Toledo serving under the king and his Christian ministers. The most recent conquerors of Toledo were busy setting up an economic and administrative network among the Christian population with Arab cultural roots, known as Mozarabes, who had fallen under the ever widening domain of the Christian kingdom. Although orthodox Muslims were instructed by their religious authorities to avoid living under Christian rule, it was only the affluent and the powerful who could afford to leave the newly occupied areas and migrate to Andalusia. The Jewish minority remaining in Castile, and those who were drawn into it were considered well- established and safe in their enclave among the general population. They excelled in the advanced sciences garbed in Arabic, as well as in Andalusian poetry and belle lettre, an important element in the political weave of the society. Jews also ventured into beneficial professions like medicine, economics and diplomacy, and were known as money- lenders and treasurers who acted as emissaries to the king whose resources would inevitably dwindle in times of war. Christian nobles and fortune- hunters frequently revolted against their lords and were forced to deal with Jews who remained loyal to the king, and this did not make them always overly fond of the king’s faithful mediators.
