Go tell Yitzhak his friend is in prison, And that he should think fast how to release him Since he has the right of redemption and is kin To reason, let him hurry and set me free If only he’d see how the uncouth have joined forces And cling to me he’d be shaken with pity. In the poem “ When the morning of life had passed” ( Shirei HaH ˙ ol, Moshe Ibn Ezra 149), which he wrote to his two brothers, the exiled Ibn Ezra depicts his situation in the land of Edom in somber colors. His thoughts in his new surroundings had become confused and downcast by a people “ with stammering lips” ( Isaiah 28: 11) and “ of an obscure speech” ( Isaiah 33: 19). He asks of the Lord to be saved so that he can flee, if only by the skin of his teeth ( Job 19: 20): È «  BÈ ¿ Ú « ¯ ¿ Â È « Ú≈ ¯ eÏ ¬ ‰ ¿ · ƒ  d » a / ץΔ ¯ Δ‡ È≈ Ï¡‡ ȃ ˙ B‡ Ô » Ó ¿ Ê ‰ » Á »  È «  » Ù eÏ ¿ Ù »  ÌΔ‰ È≈  ¿ t ¯ eMƒÓ / ‰ ΔÙ È≈ ˜ ¿ ÓƒÚ ¿  ‰ » Ù… » ˘ È≈‚ ¬ Ú « Ï Ì « Ú È « pƒL ¯ BÚ ¿ a Ë≈ Ï » nƒ‰ ¿ Ï ÌΔ‰≈ Ó / ‡ » ¯ ¿ ˜ ƒÈ ¯ B ¯ ¿ c ÈƒÏ Ìȃ‰ G¡‡ ȃk „ « Ú Fate has steered me to a country where all my thoughts are bewildered, a land of stammerers and stutterers, Seeing their faces, my face falls until God will proclaim my freedom that I may escape by the skin of my teeth. page TOC Home
