הקדמה בעה״י. בשנות תרצ״ז— תרצ״ט פרסמתי את ספרי תוספת ראשונים ח״א— ח׳׳ד על כל התוספתא. לקטתי מכל ספרי הראשונים את פסקאות התוספתא שהביאו ז״ל בחבוריהם. והרי אין דרכם של רבותינו ז׳׳ל להביא מן הברייתות אלא כדי לפרשן או לפרש על פיהן מקורות אחרים, או ללמוד מהן הלכה, או לדחותן מן ההלכה. אבל ראיתי שמ״מ הפרוץ מרובה על העומד, וחלק גדול מן התוספתא לא הובא כלל בספרי הראשונים. הפירוש המובהק ביותר לתוספתא, הפירוש של הגאו ן ר, דוד פארדו, חסדי דוד, אזל כבר מזמן מן השוק, ומעטים הם תלמידי החכמים המשתמשים בו. יתר על כן, הספר נדפס באותיות זעירות ובלי סימני הפסק, והעין לפעמים דולגת על כמה פנינים . כן, לדוגמא, כתבתי בתוספת ראשונים ח״א סוף עמ׳ 106 : ולא יכולתי לרדת לסוף פירושה של מליצה זו. ובאמת בפירוש המליצה תלויה כל ההלכה שם, וכל המפרשים הגיהו שם ונכנסו בדוחק י דחוקים. בזמנו עיינתי בחסדי דוד, ולא הרגשתי בפירושו, ורק אחרי עיון רב מצאתי את פירוש התוספתא בלי הגהה. כשפתחתי שוב את ספר ח״ד ראיתי שעוד מעט וייחסתי לעצמי פירוש שכבר עמד עליו בח״ד, עיין מ״ש להלן עמ׳ 735 שורה 41 . ולהלן במבוא ) עמ׳ י״ז ואילך( נבאר למה התרנו לעצמנו להוסיף על דברי הרב הנ״ל. כתב היד של פנים התוספתא העתיק בשבילי הרב ר׳ יהושע העשיל באבד, ואף סיד ר את שנויי הנוסחאות מדפוס ראשון, כ״י ערפורט והקטעים מן הגניזה. אני השויתי שלש פעמי ם כל אות ואות שבהעתקה ) ופעמיים שבשנויי נוסחאות( עם כתבי היד, ופשיטא שהאחריות נופלת עלי גרידא. עלינו להזכיר כאן את העזרה הגדולה שקבלנו מספרו הגדול של עמנואל לעף, דיע פלור ה דער יודען. החכם הגדול כמעט שלא הניח מקום להתגדר אחריו בבאור שמות הצמחים ומהותם. ואף שהוספנו עליו כמה דברים מן המקורות החיצוניים הקלסיים לא היינו אלא כמוסיפים טיפו ת לים הגדול. ועכשיו שנתבררו הגירסאות הנכונות ע״פ כתבי יד וראשונים מתבקשים החכמי ם המכירים את תורת הצמחים לא מן הספרים אלא מן המציאות ללמד אותנו את האמת. כיוצא בו מן הנמנע הוא שלא להזכיר כאן את הרב הגדול ר׳ חיים יהושע קוסובסקי שליט״א, מחב ר הקונקורדנציות למשנה, תוספתא, תרגום אונקלוס ותלמוד הבבלי, שהושיט לנו עזרה בחבוריו הנפלאים. הגב׳ ד״ר יהודית ליברמן לא הסתפקה בזה שעודדה אותי להקדיש ימים ולילות לתורה, אלא טרחה בעצמה לקרוא את שינויי הנוסחאות שבתוספתא ולהשוותם עם ההעתקה של כתב הי ד שנמסר לדפוס. ידידיי הרבנים ר׳ זלמן דימיטרובסקי ור׳ יהושע העשיל באבד קראו חלק גדול של על י ההגהה בעמודים ועזרו לי גם בהשוואת כתב יד ווינה עם פנים הנדפס. מסדרי האותיות של בית הדפוס של ד״ר מאוריס דזשייקובס עשו את מלאכתם, מלאכת שמים, במסירות ובאמונה, והמגיה ד״ר מנחם ג. גלן הגדיל לעשות. יעמדו כולם על הברכה. ואחרון אחרון ידידי הרב ר׳ אליעזר ארי׳ פינקלשטין, נשיא בית המדרש שלנו, שהי ה הגורם העיקרי לכתיבת הספר והופעתו. וזכות גדולה נתגלגלה ע״י ר׳ מאיר ליב רבינוביץ מכאן , שבהוצאותיו גרידא נדפס הספר, וזכינו על ידו לתורת התנאים בהוצאה מדוייקת. יתברכו מ ן השמים. ש. ל. ז
