Three Jewish Communities in Medieval...

The history of three Jewish Communities in Medieval Valencia: Castellón de la Plana, Burriana, Villarreal.

Introduction accumulated over and above the capital sum, the penalty was loss of both capital and interest. Payment of debts had  to be effected before two witnesses, a Jew and another Christian. 1 8  After a period of six years, the credit granted automatically  became repayable, unless the debtor was a scholar or was absent. 1 9  The compounding of interest, which was contrary to the common  law of Valencia ( Costum de Valen-cia), was severely penalized. 20 Both Jews and Moslems were allowed to own shops and workshops and to engage in commerce in complete freedom,  providing that their dealings were absolutely legal and honest, 2 1  and that they observed the prohibitions and bans on items requiring a special export licence. 22 The juridical situation of the Jews of the Kingdom of Valencia, as determined in the Furs, was further complemented by the promulgation of special royal privileges. Some of these were general in scope, while others were of a local or personal nature. To avoid overburden-ing our account, in an attempt strictly to define this legal framework, we have chosen to give examples of the measures taken, some favourable, others not. Likewise we have included remissions, confirmations, orders and other royal concessions. The examples are given with the corresponding archive and bibliographical references: 1261, Valencia Ides of April. Jaime I ratified acquisitions of houses, orchards, vineyards, etc., by the Jews of Valencia, and exempted them from payment of certain tributes. ACA Reg. 11, f. 202 v°, M. F ( I) n° 357. 1278, Pedro III the Great threatened the Jews of the Kingdom of Valencia with loss of all their privileges if they were not presented at the Royal Chancellery for confirmation and ratification within a delay of one month.
