The Jews of Navarre in the...

Documented depiction of the economic activities of the Jews and their work at the service of the Crown in this Christian kingdom.

P R E F A C E This book, written as a tribute to the Jews of Navarre in the Middle Ages, has been prepared at the request of Prof. Haim Beinart and Dr. Yom Τον Assis, editors of  Hispania Judaica. The request was made during the VIIIth World Congress of Jewish Studies held in Jerusalem in 1981. It is difficult to express my gratitude. This work has given me an additional opportunity to deepen my knowledge on the Jews, the Kingdom of Navarre and the Middle Ages, three fields that require the devotion of the heart and which in turn offer the joy of discovery. Any historian who specializes in the history of the Iberian Peninsula finds no difficulty in meeting Jews in his research, since the Jewish people were an essential social component of the Iberian world; it is so in Navarre, where the Jews were allowed to stay until 1498, before the Kingdom finally disappeared in 1512. Prof. Beinart and Dr. Assis enabled me to enjoy this experience, a modest contribution to the fruitful research undertaken by the historians of Iberian Jews. My heartfelt thanks are due to Prof. Beinart and Dr. Assis. My warmest thanks are offered particularly to Dr. Raquel Ibáñez who invested so much of her time and knowledge in carefully supervising the preparation of this book. We also thank Dr. Jeffrey Green who translated the book from French. Their collaboration was all the more precious as I was so far away from Jerusalem. I greatefully thank Mr. Ben Zion Yehoshua, the Director of Magness Press, for his diligent help and expert advice. This book is no less theirs than it is mine.
