Upon invitation of Regius Professor of Hebrew at Oxford Universtiy S.R. Driver, Prof. Neubauer has undertaken the task of editing a complete catena of Jewish commentaries on the remarkable chapter of the biblical book of Isaiah which has for ages formed one of the principal battle-fields between Christians and the Jews (three verses of the fifty-second chapter, have been added as well).

Driver's request was "gladly acceded to", according to Driver himself, and the collection in the present two volumes comprise not merely commentaries, but also extracts relating to the same subject from works of controversy and other sources, whether composed in Hebrew or in any of the other languages adopted by Jews from time to time in the varied homes of their exile.

These are arranged, as nearly as possible, in chronological order. Among the authorities consulted are Septuagint, Targum Yonathan, Talmud (both Yerushalmi and Bavli), Midrash Rabbah, Tanhuma, Yalqut Shim‘oni, Siphré, and the P’siqthâ (as cited by Hulsius, in his Theologia Judaica, 1643, from the לכור תקבא), Zohar, the Arabic version of the Ga’on, R. Sa‘adyah, writtings of the Karaite, Yepheth ben ‘Ali (a contemporary of Sa‘adyah), the kabbalistic midrash known as the Mysteries of E. Shim‘on ben Yohai, works of R. Sh’lomoh Yizhaqi, the celebrated French commentator, born about 1030 at Troyes, more familiarly known as Rashi, plus many others (almost 100) Jewish commentators.

All of them have been translated jointly by Nubauer and Driver; Spanish commentaries have been translated by under obligations to H. J. Mathews, of Exeter College, Oxford.

In all cases, it has been the aim of the translators to render the various texts as literally as was consistent with English idiom, while at the same time reducing in some measure the diffuseness and tautology of expression not infrequently characteristic of the original. They have refrained from offering any criticisms or comments of their own even in cases where defective philology or palpably false exegesis might seem to invite or demand them.

DRIVER, SAMUEL ROLLES: English Christian Hebraist born at Southampton Oct. 2, 1846, Driver can truly be called in the words of one of the observers "the greatest Bible scholar of his generation."

One of the foremost champions of Biblical criticism, Driver has always taken a conservative view, showing much moderation and sympathy with the orthodox position. As such he was often attacked both from the Left and the Right of the field. His “A Treatise on the Use of the Tenses in Hebrew” (Oxford, 1874; 3d ed., 1892), has remained one of the most complete presentation of the subject.

 

For Driver “the Old Testament is not a systematic treatise on theology, but the record of a historical revelation, which, just because it was historical, passed through many successive phases, and was completed gradually”; and the conclusions at which he arrives “affect, not the fact of revelation, but only its form. They help to determine the stages through which it passed, the different phases which it assumed, and the process by which the record of it was built up. They do not touch either the authority or the inspiration of the scriptures of the Old Testament” (compare his “Isaiah,” Preface, and “Introduction,” p. vii., New York, 1891).

 

 

Driver is the author of numerous critical works dealing with the most important books of Tanakh, and his “Introduction” is still one of the standard English work on the subject. He has edited two small rabbinical works: a commentary on Jeremiah and Ezekiel by Moses ben Sheshet, London, 1871, and one on Proverbs, attributed to Abraham ibn Ezra, Oxford, 1880. Driver has also been a collaborator on the second edition of Smith’s “Bible Dictionary,” on Hasting’s “Dictionary of the Bible,” and on Cheyne and Black’s “Encyclopædia Biblica,” and was coeditor, with Professors Brown and Briggs, of  The Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew and English Lexicon.
