C  h a p t e r Home  | T O C  | I n d e x 1 P R E FAC E THE LECTURES that I now present to the public were originally composed for the teachers’ post- graduate courses held in the summer of 1940 in Jerusalem. At the conclusion of these courses, many of the teachers who had attended approached me with the request that I should publish this series of lectures, and thus make it easier for them to revise the subject when they so desired; at the same time those who had not heard my discourses would be able to study them in printed form. I readily agreed, and I immediately prepared the lectures for publication. I regret that for reasons be-yond my control the printing was delayed until now, and that only after the lapse of more than a year has the book been able to make its appearance. The subject of which this volume treats has occupied me a long time. When I was working on my lectures on the Pentateuch, and more particularly on the Book of Genesis, which I delivered in the State University of Florence from the academic year 1925– 26 on-ward, I began to realize that the prevailing theories do not provide a complete and wholly satisfactory solution of the difficulties and problems arising from an investigation of the Biblical text. This has prompted me to re- examine these difficulties and problems in-dependently on the basis of a detached and exact textual study. To this task I devoted first a series of essays in Italian, Hebrew and German, and ultimately a comprehensive and voluminous work in Italian, which was published in 1934, under the auspices of the University of Florence and with the assistance of the Italian Aca-demy 1. I am now compiling a second edition of that book in Hebrew, but the task of revising the material will undoubtedly 1 La Questione della Genesi, Florence 1934 ( Pubblicazioni della R.
