The present volume examines individuals and groups that have influenced their times and societies in what Sidney Hook, the philosopher, defined in his book, The Hero in History, as someone who has had a profound impact on the history of his country and the world.
Historical research no longer favors histories written about individuals who ``made`` history. With the development of the sociological point of view, more and more historians devoted themselves to the cultural, economic and geographic conditions which, by implication, ``made`` history. And yet sociologists are still fascinated by the concept of leadership in its various models and manifestations, and its varying efficacy.
Times of crisis are the making or unmaking of a leadership. The present volume examines this theme in great depth and variety, encompassing a time span from classical Athens to the second half of the 20th century, and moving through Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The fifteen crises under discussion are also diverse: wars, forced conversion, immigration, and social upheaval. Insights touch on military strategy and tactics, gender, political ideas and government, international relations, and religious establishment.
It is argued that true and effective leaders operate in a multidimensional framework that combines styles, skills, attributes and abilities that fall within management and leadership. The various researches in this volume suggest that there cannot be one all-encompassing model, definition or style of leadership.
Therefore, this volume will be of interest to the student of history as well as to the general reader. For the sociologist this book has special value in that it brings forth a wealth of phenomena that demand explanation before we can hope to develop a sociological understanding of leadership.
הכרך הנוכחי בסדרת מחקרי בר-אילן בהיסטוריה בוחן יחידים וקבוצות שהשפיעו השפעה מכרעת על תקופתם ועל חברותיהם, השפעה בסדר גודל המאפיינת ``גיבורים``, כלשונו של הפילוסוף סידני הוק בספרו הגיבור בהיסטוריה .
יחידים ש``עשו היסטוריה`` אינם נושא מקובל במסגרת המחקר ההיסטורי הנעשה היום. ככל שהתפתחה נקודת המבט החברתית, כך התרכז חקר העבר יותר ויותר בבחינת תנאים והיבטים תרבותיים, כלכליים, גיאוגרפיים וכדומה, שהם, דבר הלמד מעניינו, הגורמים הקובעים את השינויים ההיסטוריים. ובכל זאת, זהו נושא שלא נס ליחו; ואכן מושג המנהיגות קוסם דווקא למחקר הסוציולוגי המעודכן; הוא בוחן אותו על המודלים השונים של מנהיגות ואת גילוייה והאפקטיביות המשתנה שלה.
מנהיגות נבחנת בזמני משבר. נושא זה נבחן בכרך זה בחמישה עשר מחקרים היסטוריים העוסקים מתוך העמקה רבה במגוון משברים ומנהיגים. המאמרים מגוונים הן מהבחינה הכרונולוגית – מאתונה הקלאסית ועד המחצית השנייה של המאה העשרים – והן מהבחינה הגיאוגרפית – אירופה, אסיה והאמריקות. המשברים שנחקרו נעים בטווח רחב של הקשרים: מלחמות, אניסות, הגירה ואי שקט חברתי. המאמרים מספקים תובנות בשאלות כגון אסטרטגיה וטקטיקה צבאית, מגדר, הגות פוליטית, ממשל ויחסים בינלאומיים, וממסד דתי.
מן המאמרים עולה שמנהיגים אמיתיים ואפקטיביים פועלים במסגרת רב-מרחבית הכוללת סגנונות, מיומנויות, תכונות וכישורים שמגדירים מנהיגות וניהול. המחקרים מצביעים על כך שיש לקבל את העובדה שאין מודל אחד המכיל את כל הווריאציות של מנהיגות, כשם שיש יותר מסגנון אחד המאפיין מנהיגים.
כרך זה יעורר עניין אצל לומדי ההיסטוריה כמו גם בקהל הרחב. עניין מיוחד ימצאו בו סוציולוגים בהביאו לפניהם עושר של תופעות שראויות לתשומת לב לפני שאפשר יהיה לפתח הבנה סוציולוגית של מושג המנהיגות.

Prof. Moisés Orfali, is Dean of the Faculty of Jewish Studies at Bar-Ilan University and professor of Jewish History. He has published several books and articles on the history of Sephardic Jews in the late middle ages and early modern times in general, and Judeoconvesos and their leadership and milieu in particular.
