II 21, 12:  elsewhere בית־ שְׁאָן ; in the Greek period called Scythopolis ( Σκυθ ¬ ν πόλις; Jud. 1, 27  LXX, 2 Macc. 12, 29), now Beisan. An important fortress, standing on a natural mound, artificially strengthened by scarping the side, and commanding the entrance from the E. up the Vale of Jezreel, and so into N. Palestine generally ( H. G. 357 f.; EB. i. 566 f.). For long after the entry of the Israelites into Canaan, and no doubt even at this time, it was held by the Canaanites ( cf. Jud, 1, 27. Jos. 17, 11). אליו ישבי יביש גלעד . 11 ]  C. אליו . כל יביש גלעד is very intrusive. את אשר ] C. . את כל־ אשרוילכו כל־ הלילה . 12 ]  C. omits. ויקחו ] C. . וישאוגְּוִיַּת . . . גְּוִיּׄת ]  C. גופח) . גּוּפַת . . . וּפׄת only here in OT. A word belonging to Aramaic and the later Hebrew.)מחומת בית שן ]  C. omits.וַיָּבאוּ יבשה  ] C. וַיְבִיאוּם יבישה .— Probably ויבאו here should be vocalized וַיָּבִאוּ ( so LXX, Pesh.): the suffix, though added by the Chronicler, is not needed ( see e. g. 16, 17). וישׂרפו אתם שם ]  C. omits.ויקחו את־ עצמתיהם ויקברו . 13 ]  C. . ויקברו את־ עצמותיהםהאשל ביב֑שה ]  C. האלה ביבש . On ביבשה , see on I 23, 15. ויצמו ]  C. ויצומו . ( Vv. 13– 14 in Chronicles are an addition, made by the compiler of Chronicles himself, and exhibiting throughout the marks of his style: cf. LOT. 8 pp. 526, 535 ff., Nos. 3, 40.)II 1– 5, 16.  Lament of David over Saul and Jonathan, David made king at Hebron over Judah, and subsequently, after the murder of Ishbosheth, over all Israel. Capture by Joab of the stronghold of Jebus, which David henceforth makes his residence.1, ודוד שב . . . וישב . 1 ]  a arc. clause, = ‘ when David had ’ etc. ( as RV.); cf. 1 Ki. 1, 41  ( Tenses, § 160; cf.
