35 The Book of Adam: Two Accounts A book given to Adam in the Garden of Eden flew away when he was expelled, but with his pleading to God, it was restored to him. I Rabbi Abba said, “ A book was actually given from above to the First Man, and through it he became acquainted with the higher Wisdom. That same book was then given to the “ sons of God” the wise of the generation, and all who were privileged to study it learned the higher wisdom. That  book was given to the  First Man from the Master of Mysteries, 1 with  three messengers2 appointed  to deliver it to him. When Adam was about to leave the Garden of Eden, he took that book with him, but when he actually left, it swiftly flew away. He prayed and cried before his Master, and the book was returned to him as before, so that this Wisdom would not be lost to humankind, and so that humans might endeavor to acquire knowledge of their Master. Similarly we have learned that Enoch had a book from the very same place from which the Book of the Generations of Adam had come . . .” ( 1: 37b) II “ This is the book of the generations of Adam”— of those in his likeness.
