ADVERTISEMENT The Committee in charge of the Series of Jewish Classics present herewith a critical edi-tion, in three volumes, of the Mekilta de- Rabbi Ishmael, a body of ancient comments and tradi-tional interpretations of the Torah. The Mekilta of Rabbi Ishmael is one of the oldest of these interpretations. It contains an exposition of a large part of the book of Exodus and represents the two main bodies of interpretations: the Hal-akah, or legal, and the Haggadah, or moral and religious teachings. The work also contains allu-sions to historical events and ancient legends not found elsewhere. The critical text and the English translation were both prepared by Professor Jacob Z. Laut-erbach of the Hebrew Union College. The Com-mittee believe that in issuing this publication a more exact text than heretofore existed will be made available to scholars, and that the transla-tion will make this interesting and valuable work accessible to English readers.
