Meeting of Cultures and Clash of...

Preface We present herewith the proceedings of the Fourth International Confer-ence on the History of Adult Education, around the theme  Meeting of Cultures and Clash of Cultures, which was organized in the spring of 1992 by the Martin Buber Institute for Adult Education of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The participants at this conference — held at  The Tantur Ecumenical Institute for Theological Studies — included outstanding adult educators, political scientists and statesmen from vari-ous countries: Israel, Germany, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Ire-land, Belgium, Serbia and Slovenia, Russia and the United States. The conference focused on the role of adult education in multicultural societies in view of the unexpected revival of nationalism, separatism and xenophobia in the post- cold־ war era. Among the questions dealt with were: how best to further interethnic understanding and democratic values in pluralistic societies; how to defuse the overpowering tensions existing between majorities and minorities, between conflict- ridden nations and between various ethnic, cultural and religious entities. Should the dominant majority strive to assimilate its minorities for the sake of national integrity, or is this a counterproductive act? Can a democratic society treat all its members as equals and at the same time officially recognize their par-ticularistic cultural identity? Is political recognition of ethnicity essential to human dignity? Special attention was paid to the consequences of the perestroika, which brought about dramatic transformations in Europe, as well as in the relationship between the two superpowers — the United States and the former Soviet Union. Among the topics discussed: the implications of the disintegration of the Soviet empire; the liberation and self- determination of the Communist satellites; the end of the East- West conflict; the split of Czechoslovakia into two separate entities; the current brutal armed struggle among the members of the former Soviet republics ( e. g.
