Consolation for the Tribulations of Israel...

Many centuries ago a thoughtful and scholarly Jew asked the question: Why do the righteous suffer? Anxious to help us reach out for an answer, a brilliant young scholar, Martin A. Cohen, has prepared a translation of Consolaçam as tribulaçoens de Israel, a history of the Jews written by a Portuguese Marrano who had witnessed the tragic events that befell his people in Portugal in the first half of the sixteenth century.

x century edition which is based on them are not free of serious textual errors, such as misspellings, incorrect punctuation, word omissions and faulty word divisions. The difficulties involved in the preparation of a translation of the Consolaçam have, not without good reason, long been recognised as formidable. In my translation I have sought to communicate the Consolaçam ’ s flavor and variegated style in a lucid and modern English. To accomplish this I have divided Usque’s long periods into shorter components, with corresponding adjustments in the various parts of speech affected. I have omitted many of the redundant expressions which characterize Usque’s style, but which are not palatable in modern English. I have paraphrased obscure allusions and complex metaphors. In cases of textual error I have, with conservative caution, tried to reconstruct and translate the correct original. For the sake of readability, I have omitted the scholarly brackets or parentheses for such alterations in all but a few of the most important instances, where confusion might otherwise result. In the translation of Usque’s biblical quotations, I have been guided by the translation of The Holy Scriptures published in 1917 by the Jewish Publication Society of America. My translation is based largely upon the modern edition of the Consolaçam, published in three parts by Joaquim Mendes dos Remedios in Coimbra, Portugal, between 1906 and 1908. Considerations of space have limited the length and nature of my notes to each Dialogue of the Consolaçam. A detailed commentary to Usque’s work, pointing out the numerous historical inaccuracies which it contains, would not have been without value. Most of these errors, however, were not committed by Usque; they belong to the sources which he uncritically accepted and from which he usually borrowed verbatim. It was therefore decided to use the notes to refer the reader to Usque’s sources, to call attention to the major changes for which Usque himself is responsible and to elucidate unusual details. In the case of Dialogue II, where Usque copied slavishly from the medieval Pseudo- Josephus ( the Yosippon) I have, wherever applicable, cited as well the corresponding passages from the works of Josephus. By consulting Josephus, the reader can appreciate the extent to which the Yosippon distorted historical facts and embellished them with legend. Dialogue III, based on sources not readily available to the reader, contains more detailed footnotes. This is especially true of the last thirteen historical chapters in this Dialogue, which constitute Usque’s only original historical contribution in the Consolaçam. The study and translation which follow could not have been achieved without the encouragement of my revered teachers, Professor Jacob Rader Marcus and Professor Ellis Rivkin, of the Hebrew Union College- Jewish Institute of Religion, who have given me of their knowledge, their counsel and their inspiration.
