A History of the Jews in...

One of the century`s great classics of Jewish historiography. The second volume of Professor Baer`s monumental work tells the tragic story of the dissolution of the great Spanish Jewish community.

From the Preface to the First Edition x A German manuscript of my book was ready in 1938, and I considered having it published at that time. Early in 1942, the late B. Katzenelson, urged by my friend Ben- Zion Dinaburg ( Dinur), suggested publication in Hebrew by the firm Am Oved. It fell to me to recast the book and to bring it back to the language in which Jewish scholarship had had its origin. A number of the chapters of this book had been drafted while I was still in Europe, but it was not given me to complete the work until I settled in the Land of Israel. Living contact with the center of Jewish life and history, and the close proximity of good friends who were themselves in even closer touch than I with the sources of Jewish life, made this possible. I did not permit myself to limit my work to the documentary material which I had gathered, but considered it my duty to enlarge it by including any number of problems and trends in the spir-itual life of the Jewish people. These, too, had to be considered historical factors intimately tied in with the political and so-cial. Yet, like any historian worthy of the name, I stuck to the subject in hand— to one of the most significant periods in the history of the Jewish people— seeking to clarify to myself cer-tain basic problems that were part of our peopled past and af-fected its material and spiritual future. I can only hope that this book will aid others whose spirit may want to follow the like path. ( Completed during the period of mourning for my mother who passed away in Jerusalem on the 14th of Shevat, 5705 [ 1945]).
