The book contains the photographs, transliteration and translation with a commentary of 201 of recently discovered Aramaic ostraca dating 361-311 BC. They are almost exclusive source for the study of the ethnic structure and the economic life for end of the Persian rule in the Land of Israel and the beginning of the Hellenistic period. Containing Aramaic words which are unknown from other sources, they also bear linguistic significance. The book contains a detailed introduction about the substantial and historical significance of the ostraca, as well as a glossary and an index of the proper names.

Joseph Naveh ---

Born 1928, Mukačevo (Czechoslovakia, currently Ukraine ), Joseph Naveh retired in 1997 as Professor Emeritus of West Semitic Epigraphy and Palaeography at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

In addition to the actual decipherment of various Aramaic, Phoenician and Old Hebrew inscriptions and manuscripts, Navehs research concentrates mainly on the comparative study of the inscriptions and scripts as they reflect the respective cultures of peoples and societies of differing geopolitical backgrounds.
